You don’t want to be called The Mother of Tarzan in Costa Rica, you know why? In the past, I have been telling you about certain slang words used in Costa Rica, to give you the opportunity to go a little bit native when you move here.
Learn the way of the local people and you’ll feel at home in no time! Today’s turn is to explain more about Tarzan’s mother.
Generally, Ticos are very humble people, but they are also proud people. They like to be treated correctly. I already told you in another blog why you should treat them well.
Once in a while though, you will meet one who thinks he or she is the mother of Tarzan. You’ll also find many expats who think they are the mother of Tarzan, a wrong behavior when you’re a guest in a country. Ticos generally don’t like foreigners to behave like the mother of Tarzan.
The mother of Tarzan
In Spanish, when someone is presuming to know it all, he or she is “la mama de Tarzan”, or the mother of Tarzan. I have seen a few translations for this expression: such as to be conceited or a person thinking to be hot stuff. I’d prefer the translation of la mamá de Tarzan as a smart-ass.

Wannabe Tarzan?
You’d like to feel like Tarzan? Costa Rica has many opportunities for you to feel just like Tarzan felt while he was flying through the jungle.
Zip-lining
Zip-lining above the canopy gives you an incredible opportunity to find out what Tarzan felt when he was flying from tree to tree. The longest zip-line in Latin America is in Monteverde and is almost 1 mile long.
Aerial Tram
For those looking for a much safer adventure, try the Aerial Tram near the highway to Limon. This tour will allow you to experience all the secrets the forest keeps while you fly above the treetops. From there, you can enjoy magnificent views of the Braulio Carrillo National Park and a private rain forest reserve.
Bungee jumping
If you are really crazy enough to try to find out how it feels like falling out of a tree in the rain forest, try bungee jumping. There is quite a few Bungee jumping options in Costa Rica, this one from 1,500 meters altitude is probably the scariest. There are also other bungee jumping options like Diving Bungee, The Big Swing, Rocket Launcher, and Night Jumps if you’re crazy enough or have the “huevos” to do it.
Don’t
When moving to Costa Rica, you’d probably want to be well accepted by your neighbors and the local community. If that is the case, don’t let anybody think you’re the mother of Tarzan, even if you are. This is my humble recommendation.
