It’s not every day that you move to another country, so here are some must-read moving tips for you.
There are many reasons for expats to move to Costa Rica, from its unique and beautiful natural appeal to the rich and diverse cultural heritage and business opportunities.
One thing remains constant however and that is that you will need to be properly prepared if you want to make your transition easier:
1. Six months prior to your move
There are quite a few things you would do well to deal with, such as getting more information on Costa Rica in general. Also, learning about the basics in terms of culture and more. Look for expatriate blogs that cover the country and the expectations you may have for it. Since you will be shipping all your belongings to the country, you will need to contact several moving companies if you want to have a chance to handle things on time and with ease. If you need to move your vehicle, you will also need to contact companies for quotes as well so you will know what import duties you need to cover.
2. Two months prior to your move
This is one of our primary moving tips: about shipping your belongings. If you plan on sending your items down on a shipping container, then you will need to have already picked a shipping company to cover you. You will need to cover all documents for your residency application. Most will require quite some time, so you would do well to ensure you have enough time to cover all of these things. You need to ensure you have a bank account easily accessible from within Costa Rica, especially if you plan on keeping your properties outside of the country working and paying for their expenses.
3. One month prior to your move
You will need to contact your moving company for more information. Verify the fees they have decided upon and ensure you have all packing and other moving-related tasks that need to be completed. If you have a pet and you need to take it there as well, you will need to make sure it has received the proper vaccinations at least a month in advance.
4. Two weeks prior to your move
You can set up a mail forwarding service to have all your mail shipped back to Costa Rica, which may also work well for home delivery as well. You also need to cancel any subscriptions you have going so you will not need to pay them in the long run.
5. One week prior to your move
Get all your items ready for the coming movers. You will need to ensure all your valuables, fragile items, and more are properly packed and kept safe on the trip ahead. Focus on selling any items you need to get rid of at the last minute, and then give your home a good and thorough cleaning before you leave.
Once all of that is done you will have a trouble-free moving experience you can deal with without worrying about the smaller details during your trip to Costa Rica.
