Do you know why expat’s Costa Rican retirement dreams get shattered? There are several reasons, so I’ll just have to walk you through them. However, the main reason is that they are unsuccessful because they don’t listen to those with expertise. I sometimes hear stories about
Every day, I see people asking the same questions on Facebook groups. Then, you see 60,000 comments, some ugly and some nice. But they’re all opinions, so it’s tough to determine which answers are correct. That’s why I created this article a few years ago. It’s a great and straightforward start to follow the 20 steps to learn where to live and to respond. After that, check the blogs for any topic for further information. If you ask on Facebook, like many do, you’ll get 60,000 different opinions and still won’t know what to do!
What makes me such an expert? I moved here with my parents, brother, and sister in 1980 and underwent the same process. My parents had lots of Costa Rican Retirement Dreams in those days. And believe me, they were shattered big time! And mine? I had my ups and downs, too, but I’m persistent and still happy.
What makes me the expert?
Since then, we have sold real estate to thousands of new expats and walked them through the process from start to finish. Some say that 80% of expats move back after two years, and there is even a video about that topic. Where do people come up with such utter bullshit? Where are the statistics that prove that? I promise they don’t exist. It’s a fairy tale. 90% of our clients stay and die here (you got it; I don’t have statistics on that either). Some move back because they miss the grandkids, others because they want Medicare attention, which they can’t get in Costa Rica. Yes, a small percentage can’t adjust to the culture and the language, and others have seen the country after 5 years and moved on or back. So what about dreams of retirement in Costa Rica getting shattered?
My parents had Costa Rica retirement dreams before we moved here. At the time, retiring in Costa Rica was an incredible adventure. There was no information on anything, and the internet didn’t exist. Moving to Costa Rica in those days, with two small and two small adult kids, was a big thing.
They lived in Costa Rica only for about 6 years and weren’t very happy. They couldn’t make their Costa Rican retirement dreams come true, so they moved to the Canary Islands. And,They were not happy there either. Guess why?
Why dreams get shattered
Expats who move to Costa Rica are usually motivated to be happy about it for the rest of their lives. But is it so simple? There are many reasons that dream gets shattered. The bad part is that most think it’s not their fault but someone else’s. I’d like you to wake up and realize that 99% of making your retirement or moving a positive experience depends mostly on you. I’ll give you some bullet points to work with.
Lack of Proper Planning
Many people fail to create a structured approach to moving to paradise. Without the proper due diligence, the dream will look like hell. Make a list of all the due diligence you must do before hopping on a flight to Juan Santamaria or Liberia Airport. I recommend making a list that includes simple things like how to pack your dishes and how to ship your belongings. Proper planning involves breaking down goals into achievable steps, making staying focused and adapting to challenges easier.
Unrealistic Expectations
One of the main reasons dreams get shattered is unrealistic expectations. People often set goals beyond their capabilities, resources, or circumstances. Make another list (including everyone in your family moving with you) of your expectations. Once you have a clear idea about your expectations, talk to the experts and see if those are just dreams or if you can make them true.
Adjust
Moving to a new country can be an exciting yet challenging experience. The transition involves adapting to a new culture, language, and way of life. Adjusting successfully requires patience, an open mind, and proactive efforts. This essay explores key strategies to help individuals settle into a new country smoothly.
1. Embracing Cultural Differences
One of the most crucial steps in adjusting to a new country is understanding and respecting its culture. Every country has customs, traditions, and social norms which may differ from what one is accustomed to. Researching the culture beforehand and observing local customs upon arrival can help blend into the society. Being open to new experiences, such as trying local food and participating in cultural events, fosters a sense of belonging.
2. Learning the Language
Language is a key aspect of integration. Even basic knowledge of the local language can make daily interactions easier and more enjoyable. Enrolling in language classes, using language learning apps, and practicing with native speakers can significantly enhance communication skills. Learning the language helps in practical matters like shopping, commuting, and building relationships with locals.
3. Making friends
We have clients who want to go native without even speaking Spanish. That won’t work. So learn the language first if you want to make friends locally. There are many mixed marriages, one being local and the other a foreigner. Making friends with locals and fellow expatriates can provide a sense of community, but it is often not so easy. Joining social groups, attending community events, and participating in activities can help meet new people. For expatriates, online forums and social media groups can also be valuable in finding support and advice.
4. Liking the food
Something as simple as adjusting to the local food can make your life miserable. Vegans won’t have any problems adjusting here. But there are other food products that you won’t be able to find or that are unaffordable.
5. Managing Finances and Legal Matters
What you assume as normal, might not be the case once you arrive in paradise. For example, opening a bank account and sending money here is not as simple as you think. Financial stability and legal compliance are vital for a smooth transition. Learning about the cost of living, banking options, and taxation policies can help manage expenses effectively. Understanding visa regulations, residency permits, and local laws ensures that one remains legally compliant. Seeking guidance from legal professionals can prevent complications.
6. Lack of Perseverance
Achieving dreams requires dedication and persistence. Many individuals give up too soon when faced with obstacles. The path to success is often fraught with challenges, including failures, criticism, and financial struggles. Those who lack perseverance may abandon their dreams at the first sign of hardship, leading to shattered aspirations. On the other hand, those who persist despite difficulties increase their chances of turning their dreams into reality.
7. Fear of Failure
Fear of failure often prevents individuals from taking the necessary steps to achieve their dreams. Doubts and insecurities can lead to procrastination or reluctance to take risks. When people hesitate too much, opportunities pass them by, making their dreams seem unattainable. Fear paralyzes action, ultimately causing dreams to wither before they can be realized.
8. Negative Influences
